Live-y Goodness

When I'm at school, I don't have a car. Because I don't have a car, I pretty much never listen to the radio. Because I don't listen to the radio, I really don't know who, what or where good music is being played in the greater Pittsburgh area.

I follow the bands I like the most via their website or sites like AbsolutePunk.net to find out when and where their next tour is going to be. I also sometimes pick up a copy of the Pittsburgh City Paper and make a note if I band I like will be coming through the venues advertisements.

There is nothing like live music and in a day and age where downloading is so popular, it's one way to support the bands you love.

So I ask you, my gentle readers, what is your method de jure of finding out about bands playing live?

  1. Besides the sites that you mentioned and the City Paper, there are a couple of other sites that have proved helpful in checking out who is coming in town. One of them is Pitt2night, which features a lot of events going on around the city. (http://pitt.cities2night.com/Default.aspx)
Another one is TribLive, run by the Tribune Review. (http://calendar.triblive.com/?_s_icmp=nav_things) And then of course, the absolute best place to find bands that are coming into town is on the websites of local promoters. The promoter that I intern for, Drusky Entertainment, has a complete concert calendar on their site. Check it out - www.druskyentertainment.com

  2. Does the radio inform people when bands are coming to pgh? I had no idea.

Umm... I'm pretty bad with keeping up on who's coming to town, mainly because my friends don't listen to a lot of the music I do. Honestly I just look up my favorite bands on Ticketmaster once in a while to see if they're coming or not.

We were actually just discussing this over at Opinyinz, and there's an Opus One email newsletter that you can sign up for that tells you weekly what shows are coming to places like Mr. Smalls. http://www.opusoneproductions.com/ Go there to check it out.

  3. I was going to mention the Opin-yinz post talking about this, which you would know about IF YOU COMMENTED ON THE BLOGS, PAT. YOU ASSHOLE. (Just kidding.) I wrote a long ass comment on it concerning my gripes and theories about why bands never come through Pittsburgh, but what you really need to know is the three ways I discover concerts: Ticketmaster, Opus One Productions (already cited by Kayla), and Last.FM. Last.FM is a music aggregation site, and it includes an events section where users create event listings for concerts they're attending, and people going to that concert can show that they're also attending. It's kind of like a Facebook event. It's the most comprehensive listing of local music events in any region that I've seen because it's user-generated. Check it: http://www.last.fm/events
